Regular visitors to The Flying Banzini will know the three big jazz photos on the wall. Featured are Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus. These are three of several photos my dad, Alan Scharf, took on May 15, 1953 at a concert famously known as Jazz at Massey Hall. Whole books have been written about this concert and his photos have been published previously. He was one of two men there that night with a camera.

Mark Miller’s book (Globe and Mail jazz critic) is still available. Cool Blues: Charlie Parker in Canada 1953 by Miller, Mark (1990)

A couple of months ago a photo researcher looking for my father found me. I put him in touch with dad and soon five of dad’s photos from 62 years ago will be published in the booklet accompanying a vinyl re-release of Jazz at Massey Hall. Very cool. And, of course, I am very proud. I am glad that he’s my dad.

Pictured above, the photographer and his work.
