NEW: Order for Pickup

Soft bun sandwiches are a canvas waiting to be painted. And, how to make a restaurateur happy.

When we re-did the menu a couple of weeks ago, the main change was adding meatloaf and crispy pork belly to our roast meats and making the soft bun sandwiches more of a build your own methodology. What was happening was that customers were ordering the beef sandwich sauce on the chicken sandwich, etc. Thus, it seemed obvious that we should just open up the whole process and let customers decide – for their palate — what sauce goes best with porchetta (I still love the mango chutney).

What I didn’t anticipate is that customers would start to build our soft bun sandwiches into impressive works of art.

The sandwich pictured above – Roast chicken with bacon, goat cheese, chipotle mayo, tomato, spinach, and red onion – garnered a standing ovation from Chef Nico and Sous Chef Dan prior to me delivering it to the table. It was consumed, by the way, by a petite young woman. Her two friends had similar sandwiches.

See yeaterday’s blog… I LOVE serving our meatloaf sandwich for the visual impact alone. It also tastes pretty freakin’ fantastic.

How to make me happy?

Last night there was a customer who dined alone. We got busy and I never had a chance to get back and check that she was enjoying her supper before she was finished. She had the Zooma Zooma beef panini. When I finally did get back to her, she had finished the sandwich. I apologized for not checking on her and asked if everything was satisfactory.

She begins by saying, “Well…”

There was a long pause. I winced and my mind raced trying to figure out what had gone wrong. She continued, “… that was the best roast beef sandwich that I have ever had.”

Sheer joy! Set me up perfectly. I fell for it. Thank you for you kind words.

Happy New Year. I hope that 2014 finds many more people discovering The Flying Banzini. I know that we will work hard to get better every day – serve better food, with better service in a fun, whimsical atmosphere. And I hope that you, our customers, find a new grand adventure in 2014 that leaves you challenged, satisfied, and exhausted.
