Would you eat a meatloaf sandwich?

We continue to talk about our Roast Beef Sandwich. Some days good, some days not as good. It’s never bad but it has very little “wow factor.” Unlike our porchetta sandwich and our roast chicken sandwich, both which will cause our customers to say things like, “This is the best sandwich I have ever had.”

We are experimenting with solutions. The easiest is to move to a much better (translation – fattier) cut of beef but to keep the price where it’s at this will prove very, very difficult. Last night I started to wonder about a meatloaf sandwich.

So… assume that this is Flying Banzini meatloaf. I don’t know what that is exactly but it will definitely be a little more exciting that your momma’s meatloaf. Two questions:

(1) Would you be prone to try a beef meatloaf sandwich?

(2) Is this a reasonable substitute for roast beef or would this need to be an additional soft bun sandwich?

Reminder – please pass the word. Online ordering is now available. Your meal is ready for you when you arrive to take it out.

And, double reminder, the chef’s table starts Monday Dec 9. Guests are selected from Facebook followers and Twitter followers. Every Monday I will host eight people for supper at the Gunfighter table. We will do some recipe testing, etc.

And, triple reminder, the Sweet Banzini’s new Boozy Christmas Cheesecake flavours start this weekend. I have been sampling some. Yummy. I love port. I LOVE port cheesecake.

I would eat one — I’d suggest offer it as an additional sandwich. Any chance of offering a side of yummy garlic mashed potatoes?

I think meatloaf could be a miss. I am sure it would taste amazing, but it would be tough to substitute that in for roast beef. Plus, meatloaf has a bit of a stigma, and I think that would be a hesitation factor. I am not sure I have ever craved meatloaf, and if I did, I am also not sure I would seek it out in a restaurant (probably just make it myself, or head to Mom’s house )

I would say go for the better cut and a good roast beef sandwich - it would be shame to lose it given your slogan. How much of a cost increase would it be? If it was $1.50 or less I would say go for it. There are a few diners around town that do meatloaf, but not as a sandwich. Definitely worth some testing and exploration.

I would eat it - agree that it would be a good addition; you could call it “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”

If you nailed a solid meatloaf sandwich, I know a brewery full of guys that would eat that fairly compulsively

A soft bun meatloaf sandwich would be a welcome addition to the menu, but don’t replace the roast beef sandwich on your menu. I agree with Rachel that a better cut of beef with a slightly higher price might be an option worth exploring.

I would run for a good meatloaf sammich. Dirienzos has had them for years. I think there are two routes here, traditional tomato sauce with cheese, or a twist on steak Diane with a beer/shroom gravy.

Yes, I would order a meatloaf sandwich. I never make it at home but I have ordered it when out to dinner. Union 613 sometimes has meatloaf on the menu and it is a tasty bit of joy.

Meatloaf is not a sub for roast beef. Have you tried wrapping the roast in caul fat? I’m thinking that may add some flavor. There are some other mechanical ways to get more fat into a lean piece of meat.

Why not consider a meatball sandwich?

Still waiting on another vegan option.

I agree… not a substitute for roast beef. It looks like we will have five roast meat options: porchetta, roast beef, roast chicken, meatloaf, and crispy pork belly (which is, get this, even freakin’ better than bacon).

There are no current plans to expand our vegan or vegetariano offerings although we are going to tweak a couple.
