Aha! It’s a trend. Wait, what? Oh never mind. It’s not a trend.
Every time I think I am seeing a trend I am quickly humbled to see that it’s not a trend.
Last year, in the week following the time November time change business was VERY slow. I thought, Aha! I will remember this next year. It takes a week or two for people to get accustomed to that fact that it gets dark slightly before lunchtime.
But then this year business was brisk in the week following the time change. Huh? It was a great week. OK, I thought, this is awesome. We are shaping up to have a great November/December. But then the week just finished was slow.
Oh.
So… no trend.
Sigh…
Some things seem very predictable. As I write this, for instance, it is a Monday (always a slow day) and it is snowing. Business is going to be slow. That is predictable. Other things, like last week, are not predictable. If I were a clever mathematician I could probably calculate standard deviation and then I wouldn’t be so surprised week in and week out. But, I’m not. So, instead, I will continue to imagine trends where there are none.
We do have a lot of large reservations in the weekend between now and Christmas, though so (I think) we are headed for a good Christmas season. I will get back to you on that.
